JACKSON LEADS LIONS TO 96-87 WIN OVER WEST GEORGIA

FLORENCE – Dimarrio Jackson scored 33 of his career-high 35 points in the second half to lead the University of North Alabama men's basketball team to a 96-87 Gulf South Conference victory over West Georgia Thursday evening at Flowers Hall. The first GSC win of the season for UNA gives the Lions a 4-5 overall record and 1-2 mark in league action.

Jackson, a junior from Addis, La., was 10-of-16 from the floor and 13-for-13 from the free throw line. It's the fourth game of the season he's gone perfect from the foul line and second with at least 10 attempts. Jackson hit 10-of-10 attempts on Nov. 19 during a 94-90 home win over Oakwood.

On Thursday, the Lions used solid free throw shooting as a team to give UWG its first conference loss. For the night, UNA went 35-of-47 from the charity stripe, including a 10-of-12 showing in the final two minutes. West Georgia (5-3 overall, 2-1 GSC) could get no closer than four points down the stretch.

John Fletcher added 19 points for UNA. Rilal Richardson, who battled foul trouble throughout the game, finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Jeff Hodge rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 10 points.

North Alabama took a 36-31 lead into the break and fought through an early second-half run by West Georgia. After a basket by Jackson gave UNA a seven-point lead, the Wolves went on a 10-2 run to go ahead 41-40 with 17:10 remaining. From there, the game featured three more ties and three more lead changes. A three-point basket by Tavaras Tolliver at the 15:01 mark gave UNA the lead for good at 51-48.

The Lions led by as many as eight in the second half but could never put the game out of reach. West Georgia's Zach Taulien had 21 points, including five three-pointers to keep the Wolves in striking distance.

UNA will host West Alabama Sunday. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
