OFFENSIVE WOES PLAGUE UNA WOMEN IN LOSS

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama women's basketball team struggled to get baskets to fall Thursday evening in a 44-38 home loss to West Georgia. The Lions shot 26 percent from the floor and produced their lowest point total since the 2005-06 campaign.

With the loss, UNA falls to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in Gulf South Conference play. West Georgia (2-7 overall, 2-1 GSC) didn't fare much better on offense, connecting on just 28 percent of its shots on the night.

With both teams struggling to score, the Wolves were able to make up the difference on the glass. UWG held a 44-38 rebounding advantaging, including 21 offensive boards leading to 15 second-chance points.

The visitors trailed 18-13 at the half, but outscored UNA 24-11 in the third quarter. The Lions, who trailed by as many as eight in the second half, cut the deficit to two on three different occasions but could never tie the game or take the lead.

Trailing 37-35 with 6:15 remaining, UNA missed six straight shots before the Wolves got a basket to extend the lead to four at the 3:22 mark. West Georgia pushed the lead to 43-36 before a jumper by Shunice Herron cut the lead to five in the final minute of play.

The Lions got a turnover on the ensuing possession but could not connect and were forced to foul the rest of the way and ran out of time.

KeKe Gunter had eight points to lead North Alabama. Rachel Carter added six points, two rebounds and three blocked shots.

UNA will host West Alabama Sunday. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
