TWO MORE WINS KEEP SOFTBALL LIONS PERFECT

COLUMBUS, Ga., – The University of North Alabama softball team came away with two more wins at the GSC/PBC Southern Softball Showdown on Sunday to finish the season-opening event with a perfect 4-0 record. The Lions knocked off Armstrong State 2-1 before downing host Columbus State 6-1 at the South Commons Softball Complex.

Raven Cole picked up two wins in the circle while the Lions added another five extra-base hits on the year.

In the opener, the Lions loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh before Carmen Whitfield's one-out ground ball scored Danielle Cruickshank from third for the game-winning run. The 2-1 walk-off victory kept the Lions unbeaten at the event despite being out-hit 7-4 in the game.

Cole got the pitching win in relief after UNA starter Hillary Carpenter dueled with Armstrong ace Tori Bates for six innings. Cole entered a 1-1 game in the top of the seventh with a runner on first and no outs. She retired three of the next four batters, including a strikeout to end the inning with runners at second and third.

Carpenter got the no decision after scattering seven hits over six innings. UNA led 1-0 throughout the game until the Pirates tied it in the top of the sixth. Armstrong was poised to take the lead in the frame before Carpenter pitched out of a bases-loaded jam to end the threat.

North Alabama took an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. After a lead-off double by Bailey Nelson, Reagan Tittle's double down the left line scored the run. Neither team scored again until the sixth.

Armstrong stranded 10 base runners in the game. Three of the Lions' four hits were doubles.

Against Columbus State, Cole (3-0) allowed just two hits in six innings of work. She struck out five and allowed only one run before freshman Hannah Bodenhorn came in to get three outs in the top of the seventh inning.

Anna Gayle Norris broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning with a three-run homerun. After the Jaguars responded with a single run in the top of the fourth, UNA answered with a run in the bottom of the frame, before putting the game out of reach with a three-run fifth inning.

Harlie Barkley drove in a run and finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate. Tittle and Norris each went 2-for-3 while Brooklynn Clark was 2-for-4 to up her batting average to .571 on the season. Clark and Courtney Shields each finished the weekend with six RBI.

Next weekend, UNA will play eight games over four days in south Alabama. The Lions will play a single game at Spring Hill College in Mobile Thursday at 2:30 p.m. before participating in the Gulf Coast Invitational in Gulf Shores. North Alabama will play twice on Friday, three times on Saturday and have two more games Sunday afternoon at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
