LIONS OPEN SEASON WITH 78-64 WIN OVER TAMPA

FLORENCE – Four players reached double figures in scoring as the University of North Alabama men's basketball team opened the 2016-17 season with a 78-64 home win over Tampa Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The Lions forced 23 Tampa turnovers and held a 46-40 rebounding advantage on the day.

Austin Timms led the way with 17 points, including 12 in the first half alone. The senior from Mooreville, Miss., scored the first four points of an 8-0 run to start the game for UNA. The Spartans would never be able to pull even.

After Tampa cut the deficit to one, another 9-0 spurt gave the Lions a double-digit lead at 21-11 with 11:51 remaining in the first half. UNA led by as many as 13 in the opening 20 minutes before taking a 39-30 lead into the break.

Tampa would get no closer than seven points in the second half. Leading 52-44 with 11:23 to play, a pair of free throws by Myrek Lee-Fowlkes pushed the lead to 10 and the advantage remained double digits the rest of the way. A three-point basket by DeAndre McKinnie capped a 12-3 run and gave UNA a 64-47 lead at the 5:53 mark.

The largest lead came on another three-pointe by McKinnie to put the Lions ahead 73-52 with 3:23 to play.

Dimario Jackson added 15 points and five assists for the Lions. McKinnie was 4-for-4 from three-point range and finished with 14 points while Tavaras Tolliver added 11 points on the day. Sharwyn McGee also just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds for North Alabama.

UNA will host Saint Leo (0-1) Sunday at 2 p.m. to wrap up play at the GSC/SSC Challenge at Flowers Hall. Tampa will face UAH in the early game set for a noon tip-off.
