WALLEN LEADS LIONS TO 67-58 WIN OVER CLAFLIN

TUSKEGEE, Ala., – Freshman Ivy Wallen scored 29 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the University of North Alabama women's basketball team to a 67-58 win over Claflin Saturday at the GSC/SIAC Regional Showdown in Tuskegee. UNA (2-0) left the event as the only undefeated team after defeating host Tuskegee on Friday.
 
The Lions outscored Claflin in each quarter, slowing pulling away for the win. Wallen was a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line on the day. As a team, UNA connected on 25-of-32 foul shots.
 
North Alabama led 37-34 at the half after a basket by Wallen in the closing seconds answered a three-pointer by the Panthers.
 
A 7-0 run to start the third quarter extended UNA's lead to double digits for the first time. Consecutive baskets by Jaclyn Heath and a three-pointer by KeKe Gunter gave the Lions a 44-34 advantage with 6:41 remaining in the period.
 
Claflin closed the gap to five by the end of the quarter and got within two points on two different occasions in the final period. UNA led just 59-57 after a jumper by Claflin with 3:58 remaining. The Panthers, however, would not connect from the floor again as UNA closed the game on an 8-1 run.
 
Gunter added 14 points and was also perfect from the foul line at 4-for-4 on the day.
 
UNA will return to Flowers Hall to begin a seven-game home stretch. The Lions will face Oakwood at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
