NO. 10 CHARGERS TOP LIONS IN GSC OPENER

FLORENCE – A second-half scoring drought by the University of North Alabama men's basketball team resulted in a 91-79 loss to 10th-ranked UAH Saturday at Flowers Hall. Nursing a two-point lead midway through the period, UNA went five minutes without connecting from the floor while the Chargers built a double-digit lead and pulled away for the win. The loss gives the Lions a 4-2 record on the season and an 0-1 start to Gulf South Conference play.

UNA led 67-65 after a basket by Dakota Holtzclaw with 11:18 remaining. UAH, however, scored the next nine points to take control. The Charger's Seab Webster scored eight points during a 14-2 run to give the visitors a 79-70 lead.

Dimario Jackson ended the drought with a basket with 6:19 remaining to cut the lead to seven. After the two teams traded a pair of free throws, a three-point basket by UAH's Brandon Roberts pushed the lead to 84-74 with 4:30 to play. The lead remained double digits the rest of the way.

Three-point shooting was a big advantage for the Chargers throughout the game. UAH hit seven of its first nine three-point attempts in the first 7:10 of action. The Chargers were 10-of-17 from long range in the first half and finished the game 12 three-pointers. UNA was 6-of-25 from three-point range on the day.

For the game, UAH shot 50 percent from the floor, including a 12-of-25 showing from long range. The Chargers also held a slim 40-38 rebounding advantage.

Sharwyn McGee led UNA with 16 points and eight rebounds. Jeff Hodge added 15 points while Myrek Lee-Fowlkes connected on four three-pointers and finished with 14 points for the Lions. Jackson rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 10 points.
