VSU AVOIDS SWEEP WITH 6-1 WIN IN GAME 3

FLORENCE – Sixth-ranked Valdosta State used a four-run second inning to take an early lead and kept the North Alabama bats in check for a 6-1 Gulf South Conference victory Saturday at the UNA Softball Complex. The loss denied the Lions the chance for a three-game sweep after recording two wins in a double-header the day before.

VSU sent eight batters to the plate in the top of the second, getting four runs off four hits. A potential fifth run was thrown out at the plate to end the frame.
 
UNA got on the board in the bottom of the third with a solo home run by Anna Gayle Norris. The two-out shot made the score 4-1, but the Lions would not cross home plate again.
 
Trailing by three runs, North Alabama got base runners in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings. VSU starter Caitlyn Calhoun (5-1), however, was able to work out of jams each time. A pair of base running miscues proved costly and the Lions were unable to score. The Blazers added two runs in the top of the seventh to wrap up the scoring.
 
For the game, each team finished with five hits. Norris finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate. No VSU player had more than one hit on the day.
 
Hillary Carpenter took the loss to fall to 5-1 on the year. She pitched the first two innings before being relieved by Hannah Bodenhorn. The freshman pithed five innings, yielding one hit, a two-run homerun in the seventh.
 
UNA will play two games at Stillman on Tuesday before returning to GSC play next weekend. Game times against the Tigers are set for 1 and 3 p.m. in Tuscaloosa.
