NELSON LEADS LIONS TO SWEEP OVER STILLMAN

TUSCALOOSA – The University of North Alabama softball team improved to 15-2 on the season by sweeping Stillman on the road Wednesday by a combined score of 17-0. Bailey Nelson was 5-for-6 on the day with four RBI while three UNA pitchers combined to scatter five hits over 11 shutout innings as the Lions posted the 8-0 and 9-0 victories.
 
In the opener, North Alabama plated runs in four of the five innings to get the mercy-rule win. Nelson led off the game with a double and later scored on an error to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. In the top of the second inning, Nelson drove in two runs with a triple to right field. Courtney Shields followed with a two-run homerun make the score 6-0.
 
After a scoreless third inning, the Lions got another run off a Stillman error in the fourth. A two-run fifth inning gave UNA the eight-run lead and set the stage for the mercy-rule victory. Another RBI-double by Nelson and a run-scoring single from Reagan Tittle wrapped up the scoring.
 
Hillary Carpenter got the win in the circle to improve to 6-1 on the season. She struck out three and allowed two hits in three innings of work. Hannah Bodenhorn pitched the final two innings, striking out five and yielding only one hit.
 
Nelson finished the opener 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and a triple. She drove in three runs and scored four times.
 
In the second game, Raven Cole got the complete-game shutout for the Lions. The junior from Orange, Texas allowed just two hits in six innings. She struck out 11 batters to improve to 8-1 on the year.
 
For the second straight game, the UNA bats helped the team jump out to an early 1-0 lead. Nelson led the game off with a walk and later scored on a ground ball by Mackenzie Roberts. In the third inning, a solo homerun by Shelby Woodard and an RBI-single by Nelson gave the Lions a 3-0 lead.
 
North Alabama put the game out of reach with two more runs in the fifth inning and four in the sixth. A two-run home run by Reagan Tittle highlighted the final frame.
 
The Lions finished the game with nine runs off 13 hits. Amy Carden was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Nelson had another solid showing with a 2-fo-2 performance while Roberts finished the nightcap 2-for-4 with two RBI.
 
UNA will return to Gulf South Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at home against West Georgia. The two teams will play a double-header beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday with a single game slated for noon the following day. Both teams enter the series with 2-1 GSC records.
