SOFTBALL TEAM GETS EXTRA-INNING WIN AT SPRING HILL

MOBILE – An RBI-double by Harlie Barkley in the top of the eighth inning proved to be the difference as the University of North Alabama softball team held off Spring Hill 3-2 Thursday afternoon. UNA held the Badgers scoreless in the bottom of the frame to get the extra-inning road victory and improve to 5-0 on the season.

The Lions led 2-0 before Spring Hill (0-1) rallied with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Raven Cole came in to pitch with two on and one out in the inning. Spring Hill scored on a passed ball and a wild pitch to tie the game and make Cole the pitcher of record.

After a scoreless seventh inning, UNA's Reagan Tittle was placed on second base to start the eighth inning using the international tiebreaker rule. She was sacrificed to third before Barkley's two-out drive to left field gave the Lions a one-run lead.

In the bottom of the inning, the Badgers also began with a runner at second base. After a sacrifice bunt, however, Cole (4-0) recorded a pop up and a strikeout to end the game. She finished the game with four strikeouts against seven batters faced in 2.2 innings of work. Starter Hillary Carpenter worked the first 5.1 innings, scattering four hits with six strikeouts. She was credited with both runs with only one being earned.

UNA scored first with an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning. With Barkley on first base with one out, a single by Carmen Whitfield moved her to third before she scored on an error by the Spring Hill left fielder. Two innings later, a solo homerun by Anna Gayle Norris gave the Lions the 2-0 lead.

For the game, Norris was 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and run scored. Courtney Shields was also 2-for-4 on the day. Caroline Sagrera (0-1) took the loss in the circle for the Badgers.

North Alabama will play its next seven games at the Gulf Coast Invitational in Gulf Shores. The Lions will start the event at noon Friday against Miles. UNA will also face Lindenwood at 2:15 p.m.
