UNA SOFTBALL KEEPS ROLLING IN GULF SHORES

GULF SHORES – The University of North Alabama softball team opened play at the Gulf Coast invitational on Friday by winning two games by a combined score of 23-0. After defeating Miles 12-0 in five innings, the Lions got another mercy-rule victory by an 11-0 count over Lindenwood. The two wins give UNA a 7-0 start to the season.

Against Miles, UNA pitchers Raven Cole and Hannah Bodenhorn combined for a three-hit shutout while the Lion bats put up big numbers. North Alabama scored 12 runs off 14 hits in the five-inning mercy-rule victory.

UNA scored five runs in each of the first two innings to take control. Three consecutive RBI-doubles by Brooklynn Clark, Anna Gayle Norris and Shelby Woodard put the Lions ahead 4-0 in the top of the first. Harlie Barkley also drove in a run with a single through the right side.

In the second inning, Courtney Shields continued the scoring with a triple to left center. The hit scored Bailey Nelson, who led off the inning with a single. Woodard, Barkley, Reagan Tittle and Bragan Burns also drove in runs to give the Lions a commanding 10-0 lead.

A solo home run by Danya Snead in the fourth inning and a sacrifice fly by Danielle Cruickshank wrapped up the scoring for the Lions.

Bodenhorn came in to pitch the final three scoreless innings for UNA. She allowed one hit and struck out for batters. Cole (5-0) got the pitching win after allowing two hits with four strikeouts.

At the plate, Tittle and Barkley each posted 2-for-2 showings. Norris was 2-for-3 while Woodard was 2-for-4 from the batter's box.

North Alabama used another fast start to pave the way for a five-inning win over Lindenwood. The Lions got an RBI-single before taking advantage of an error to plate two more runs in the top of the first inning to grab a 3-0 lead. LU never recovered as Hillary Carpenter recorded the complete-game shutout to get the win.

After Shields singled and stole second base, Clark gave UNA the early lead with an RBI-single to center field. Two more runs later scored on a fielding error by Lindenwood to give the Lions a three-run lead. Clark led off the third inning with a solo homerun to give UNA a four-run lead before Norris scored on another LU error to make the score 5-0.

The Lions scored three runs each in the top of the fourth and fifth frames to put the game out of reach. A three-run homer by Cruickshank highlighted the fourth inning while UNA took advantage of another LU miscue in the fifth to add two more unearned runs.

Clark finished the game 3-for-3 with a single, double and homerun. She had a 4-for-6 showing on the day. Cruickshank and Shields each went 2-for-3 in the nightcap.

Carpenter improved to 2-0 on the year with the shutout. She tossed four hitless innings with five strikeouts. Tori Daivs pitched the bottom of the fifth inning.

North Alabama will continue play in Gulf Shores with three games on Saturday. The Lions will face Midwestern State at 12:15 p.m. before facing Tuskegee at 4:45 p.m. UNA will wrap up play on the day with a 7 p.m. showdown against the University of Mobile. All games will be played at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
