SOFTBALL WINS THREE TO IMPROVE TO 10-0

GULF SHORES – Three more victories by the University of North Alabama softball team at the Gulf Coast Invitational moved the team to 10-0 on the season, matching the program's best start in school history. UNA downed Midwestern State, Tuskegee and Mobile College Saturday at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

The Lions will face Young Harris (11:15 a.m.) and Simon Fraser (1:30 p.m.) on Sunday in an attempt to reach 11 straight wins to start the year for the first time ever. UNA opened the 2013 campaign with a 10-0 mark before falling 3-1 to Southwest Baptist.

In the opener against Midwestern State, the Lions won 3-2, getting the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth inning when an RBI-single by Bailey Nelson scored Carmen Whitfield from second base. The Mustangs got runners in scoring position in the top of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings but could not score. Raven Cole picked up the pitching victory while Hillary Carpenter pitched the seventh inning to get the save.

UNA was out-hit 8-3 in the contest but made the most of its opportunities. After a Midwestern error in the bottom of the first inning, Anna Gayle Norris singled up the middle to drive in two runs.

The second game of the day featured a no-hitter by Hannah Bodenhorn in her first start for the Lions. The freshman from Lebanon, Tenn., worked six shutout innings against Tuskegee, striking out nine with only one walk in the 8-0 victory.

While Bodenhorn was keeping the Golden Tigers at bay, the UNA bats provided enough offense to end the game in the sixth inning via the eight-run mercy rule. A sacrifice fly by Peyton DeLong scored Amy Carden from third base for the game-winner.

UNA got a solo homerun by Courtney Shields in the first inning and an RBI triple by Carden in the second to take a 2-0 lead. A five-run third inning broke the game open, highlighted by Danya Snead's three-run homer to left center. It was the fifth consecutive hit in the inning for the Lions. UNA had 10 hits in the game, led by Madeline Lee's 2-for-3 showing.

In the nightcap, UNA got a 6-0 win over NAIA's No. 7 University of Mobile. Carpenter scattered four hits in the complete-game shutout.

After plating a run in the top of the second inning, the Lions scored four times in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. Brooklynn Clark finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate with three RBI. Complete stats from the game against Mobile will be available soon.
