UNA SOFTBALL SETS RECORD WITH SWEEP AT UWA

LIVINGSTON – A double-header sweep at West Alabama gave the University of North Alabama softball team a school-record 14 consecutive victories on Saturday. The Lions won 20-4 and 13-2 to improve to 31-4 overall and 15-2 in Gulf South Conference play. Both games ended in six innings via the mercy rule.

UNA will go for the three-game sweep at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The winning streak snaps the previous record of 13 straight wins set during the 2005 season.

On Saturday, the North Alabama bats paved the way, putting up double-digit run and hit totals in each contest. UNA has now scored at least 10 runs in three straight games and a total of nine contests this season. Reagan Tittle went 6-of-9 against UWA while Courtney Shields homered twice and drove in seven runs.

In the opener, UNA led 9-0 before the Tigers recorded their first hit. A six-run third inning gave the Lions the nine-run lead before the home team responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame. After the Tigers drew a lead-off walk and eventually scored from third on a wild pitch, UWA's Audrey Diekmann connected on a three-run homerun to cut the lead to 9-4.

North Alabama answered by sending 12 batters to the plate in the top of the fourth, plating eight runs to put the game out of reach. Three more runs in the fifth inning accounted for the final score.

The 20-runs and 18 hits were both season-high for UNA. Tittle and Harlie Barkley each went 4-for-5 at the plate, combining to drive in six runs. Madeline Lee was 3-for-3 with a solo homerun while Shields added two singles and a double to finish the game 3-for-5. Brooklynn Clark and Bailey Nelson also had two hits each.

Hillary Carpenter got the pitching victory. Diekmann's homer was the only hit allowed in her four innings of work. Carpenter added seven strikeouts and improved to 15-2 on the season. Freshman Hannah Bodenhorn came in to retire three straight batters in the bottom of the fifth.

In the second game, UNA trailed 2-0 before responding with 13 unanswered runs. After scoring twice in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game, the Lions took a 4-2 lead with a pair of runs in the fifth. A solo homer by Shields gave UNA the lead for good.

A nine-run sixth inning then set up the mercy-rule victory. The Lions again sent 12 batters to the plate in the frame that was highlighted by back-to-back homeruns by Shields (three-run) and Tittle (solo).

Nelson was 3-for-5 with a double, while Anna Gayle Norris and Mackenzie Roberts each posted 2-for-3 showings in the second game. Tittle was 2-for-4, while Shields was 2-for-5 with four RBI. Raven Cole (15-1) got the win in the circle after scattering eight hits with seven strikeouts.
