LIONS SUFFER FIRST LOSS AT SHORTER

ROME, Ga., – After taking a 2-1 overall lead in the match, the University of North Alabama volleyball team could not stop a Shorter rally, falling 3-2 Friday night in a battle of the last two unbeaten teams in the Gulf South Conference. The Hawks recorded the 25-22, 21-25, 16-25, 25-17, 15-13 home victory to improve to 8-0 and 3-0 in GSC play.
 
With the win, Shorter also avenges a 3-2 loss to the Lions when the two teams last met on the same floor. On Friday, the two teams traded dominating wins in sets three and four to set up the final frame. The fifth set featured nine ties, with the last one coming at 11-11. From there, Shorter scored back-to-back points to take a 13-11 lead and prompt a UNA timeout.
 
The Lions cut the deficit to 13-12 before the two teams traded side outs down the stretch to give Shorter the victory.
 
North Alabama (9-1 overall, 1-1 GSC) had three players reach double-digit kill totals, but hit just .144 as a team. Natasha Fomina led the way with a match-high 17 kills. Lexie Bradley added 12 kills while Jessica Austin had 10 kills on the night. Jayden Davila-McClary recorded 43 assists.
 
Ashtyn Kapovich had 26 digs. Peyton Lang added 18 season-high 18 digs for the Lions. Davila-McClary completed a double-double with 15 digs while Sarah Ann Tillery also reached double figures with 11 digs for the Lions.
 
Shorter was led by Elizabeth Dowd's 13 kills and 20 digs.
 
UNA will be back in action on Saturday at Lee. First serve is set for 2 p.m. (Eastern) on the LU campus in Cleveland, Tenn.
