LIONS HOLD OFF LEE 74-69

FLORENCE – After leading by as many as 21 points in the second half, the University of North Alabama women's basketball team withstood a late Lee rally to secure a 74-69 Gulf South Conference win Thursday evening at Flowers Hall. The win broke a tie with the Flames for second place in the league standings as UNA improves to 13-3 overall and 7-3 in GSC play.

UNA appeared to be on its way to an easy win after taking a 65-44 lead with 1:04 remaining in the third quarter. The Lions led 65-45 heading into the final period. Lee, however, held UNA to only one field goal in the fourth quarter during a ferocious rally.

A three-point basket by Jaclyn Heath gave the Lions a 68-51 lead with 7:44 remaining. UNA would not connect from the floor again as Lee chipped away at the lead. A 13-0 run by the Flames cut the deficit to 68-64 in the final minute of play.

KeKe Gunter ended the scoring drought for the Lions by hitting 1-of-2 free throws with 33 seconds remaining to extend the lead to five points.

After Lee answered with a basket to make the score 69-66, Emma Wallen hit two free throws to keep the lead at two possessions with 21 seconds to play. Another basket by the Flames cut the lead to 71-68 before Wallen connected on 1-of-2 foul shots to give the Lions a 72-68 advantage with 14.2 seconds remaining.

Lee would not get off a shot in the final seconds. A foul by the Lions sent Abby Bertram to the free throw line, where she hit 1-of-2 attempts. Gunter grabbed the defensive rebound on the second miss. She drew the foul and sank two free throws of her own to account for the final score.

Gunter led all scorers with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Michaela DeKilder also recorded a double-double for the Lions with 17 points and 18 rebounds. Wallen rounded out the top scorers for UNA with 16 points.

Bertram led Lee (11-5 overall, 6-4 GSC) with 13 points.

UNA will travel to Shorter on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. (EST) on the SU campus in Rome, Ga.
