UNA WINNING STREAK ENDS AGAINST DELTA STATE

FLORENCE – Delta State raced out to a big lead and was able to hold on for an 84-79 Gulf South Conference victory over the University of North Alabama men's basketball team Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for UNA, which falls to 11-8 overall and 6-7 in league action.

After taking a 38-23 lead into the break, the Statesmen quickly extended the lead in the opening two minutes of the second half. A trio of three-point baskets by John Cornish gave DSU a 47-23 advantage with 18:36 remaining.

Delta State led by as many as 28 in the second half before holding off a late UNA rally. Two free throws gave the Statesmen a 58-30 advantage before UNA outscored the visitors 49-26 over the final 14:17 of playing time.

DSU was able to maintain the lead with a solid performance at the free throw line, hitting 27-of-32 attempts on the day. The Statesmen also held a 48-36 rebounding advantage.

The Statesmen led by 17 with 3:38 remaining before a flurry of baskets by UNA kept the outcome in doubt. After cutting the lead to 10 on two different occasions, the Lions finally got within single digits when a three-pointer by DeAndre McKinnie made the score 75-66 at the 1:27 mark.

After a free throw by DSU, Dimario Jackson hit another trey for the Lions to cut it to seven with 1:08 to play. Delta State added a single free throw on its next two possession while UNA got a jumper and a three-pointer by Jackson to make the score 78-74 in the final minute of play.

DSU, however, was able to break the press on its ensuing possession and get a dunk. The Lions missed their next five shots from the floor on the next trip. After finally grabbing a defensive rebound, the Statesmen sealed the win with two more free throws with 15.8 seconds remaining.

Lions got a runner by McKinnie, but two more free throws by DSU's Devin Schmidt put the game out of reach.

McKinnie led UNA with a career-high 18 points. The senior from Bolivar, Tenn., was 4-for-8 from three-point range and added a jumper and four free throws for the Lions.

Four other players reached double figures in scoring for UNA. Austin Timms and Tavaras Tolliver scored 14 points each. Both, however, fouled out in the second half. Jackson and Jeff Hodge scored 10 points each for the Lions. Timms also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Cornish led Delta State (13-6 overall, 8-5 GSC) with 18 points for the game.

UNA will travel to Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Spragins Hall on the UAH campus in Huntsville.
