UNA MEN KNOCK OFF FIRST-PLACE CBU 67-62

FLORENCE – Dimario Jackson scored 20 points, including seven in the final 1:24 to lift the University of North Alabama men's basketball team to a 67-63 win over Christian Brothers Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The win breaks a three-game losing streak for UNA while knocking CBU out of first place in the Gulf South Conference standings.

UNA, now 7-5 overall and 2-4 in league play, will host Union Monday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Flowers Hall.

Against CBU, the Lions led 27-23 at the break and maintained the advantage throughout the second half until the closing minutes. The Buccaneers grabbed their first lead of the second half at 53-52 on a basket by Adam Dieball with 3:39 remaining. Dieball, who was also fouled on the play, connected on the free throw to give CBU a two-point advantage.

The lead changed hands five more times down the stretch. After a jumper by Jackson at the 1:24 mark gave UNA a 60-59 lead, the Lions got a defensive stop. Jackson then hit a three-pointer from the top of the key to push the lead to four in the final minute of play.

CBU got quick baskets to cut the deficit to two twice down the stretch. The Lions, however, answered at the free throw line each time. Tavaras Tolliver hit two free throws to extend the lead to 65-61 with 18.2 seconds remaining. After another CBU basket, Jackson sealed the win with two foul shots with 5.6 seconds to play.

Three-point shooting favored the Lions throughout the game. UNA connected on six long-range shots while Christian Brothers hit just 4-of-28 attempts.

Myrek Lee-Fowlkes added 15 points for North Alabama. Tolliver finished with 10 points while Austin Timms recorded a game-high 15 rebounds.

Jeff Larkin led CBU (8-5 overall, 5-2 GSC) with 22 points.
