WALLEN, LIONS TOP CBU 68-61

FLORENCE – Emma Wallen led a third-quarter run to propel the University of North Alabama women's basketball team to a 68-61 victory over Christian Brothers Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The freshman had four three-point baskets in the period as the Lions used a 21-4 run to erase a nine-point deficit and take the lead for good.
 
With the win, UNA improves to 10-2 on the season and 4-2 in Gulf South Conference play. Wallen finished with a game-high 23 points on the day and tied a school record with seven three-pointers.
 
UNA led 26-25 at the half, but soon trailed by nine after the Buccaneers opened the third quarter on a 12-2 run. A basket by CBU gave the visitors a 37-28 lead with 5:37 remaining in the quarter.
 
A three-pointer by Jaclyn Heath started the comeback, followed by back-to-back treys by Wallen to tie the score at 37-37 at the 4:13 mark. The two teams traded baskets before another three-pointer by Wallen gave the Lions a 42-39 lead with 2:22 remaining.
 
The Lions pushed the lead to five before Wallen's fourth trey of the quarter gave UNA a 49-41 advantage in the final minute of play.
 
North Alabama led by as many as nine in the fourth quarter before CBU used a rally of its own. The Bucs cut the lead to two points twice down the stretch but could never tie or take the lead.
 
The Lions led 57-55  before scoring five straight points to put the game out of reach. A jumper by KeKe Gunter was followed by a free throw from Heath. Ivy Wallen then hit two free throws to make the score 62-55 in the final minute of play.
 
Ivy Wallen finished with 17 points while Heath added 12 points and seven assists for the Lions. Michaela DeKilder also recorded a game-high 12 rebounds. Samantha Reeves led Christian Brothers (6-5 overall, 3-4 GSC) with 21 points.
 
UNA will host Union on Monday. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m. at Flowers Hall.
