UNA WOMEN TOP UNION 75-53

FLORENCE – Five players reached double figures in scoring as the University of North Alabama women's basketball team knocked off pre-season Gulf South Conference favorite Union 75-53 Monday afternoon at Flowers Hall. KeKe Gunter and Emma Wallen scored 18 points each while Michaela DeKilder added a double-double as the Lions improved to 11-2 overall and 5-2 in GSC play.

For the second straight game, an explosive third quarter gave UNA the lead for good. The Lions trailed 27-24 at the break before using a 29-14 third-quarter run to take control. North Alabama held a slim 39-38 lead with 3:39 remaining in the period before a 13-0 run extended the lead to double-digits.

Wallen connected on a pair of three-point baskets and scoring nine points in the quarter. DeKilder added eight of her 14 points in the frame as UNA took a 53-41 lead.

Union (8-6 overall, 3-5 GSC) got within nine twice early in the fourth quarter but could get no closer. Jada Smith led the Bulldogs with a game-high 20 points.

Ivy Wallen also scored 15 points for the Lions. DeKilder finished with 14 points and a career-high 20 rebounds. The total was only five shy of a single-game record of 25, set in 1982 by Deborah Carlisle. Katelyn Nunley rounded out the top scorers for UNA with 10 points.

UNA dominated the glass in the win, holding a commanding 50-30 rebounding advantage. The Lions pulled down 21 offensive rebounds and scored 11 second-chance points. UNA also forced Union into a season-high 21 turnovers, leading to 24 points.

The win keeps North Alabama in third place in the GSC standings. The Lions were picked to finish 11th in the annual pre-season coaches' poll.

UNA will play at Delta State on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. on the DSU campus in Cleveland, Miss.
