LIONS THROTTLE KENTUCKY STATE TO OPEN SEASON

FLORENCE – Five players reached double figures in scoring as the University of North Alabama women's basketball team opened the 2017-18 season with a 107-69 win over Kentucky State Friday evening at Flowers Hall. UNA shot 57.9 percent from the floor, including a blistering 25-for-39 (64.1 percent) showing in the second half to pull away for the win.
 
Emma Wallen led all scorers with 25 points. The sophomore connected on seven three-point baskets to tie her own single-game record shared with three other players. She finished the game 9-of-20 from the floor.
 
After taking a 48-30 lead at the half, the Lions began to take control in the third quarter. Five different players scored during a 21-6 run that gave UNA an 80-56 lead heading into the final period.
 
North Alabama reached the century mark with 3:02 remaining on a layup by Savannah Stults. The fast-break basket made the score 101-62. UNA led by as many as 40 on four different occasions.
 
Ivy Wallen added 18 points for the Lions. Ansley Eubank scored 16 points and added 11 assists while Stults added 15 points on the night. Kenysha Coulson rounded out the top scorers with 12 points for the Lions.
 
Brooke Wallace led Kentucky State (0-1) with 14 points for the game.
 
UNA will play Lynn on Saturday morning. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m. at Flowers Hall.
