PANETTI, WALLEN LEAD LIONS TO 93-81 WIN OVER LYNN

FLORENCE – Brittany Panetti and Ivy Wallen combined for 62 points as the University of North Alabama women's basketball team held off Lynn 93-81 on Saturday to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Lions forced 29 turnovers and shot over 50 percent from the floor for the second straight game.

Panetti, a 6-2 transfer post player from New Mexico, led all players with 32 points. The sophomore was 10-of-12 from the floor and added another 12-of-14 showing from the free throw line. Wallen added 30 points and eight assists on the day.

UNA was unable to pull away until the closing minutes. The Lions trailed by five in the third quarter before using a 13-3 run to take the lead for good. Lynn cut the deficit to a single point early in the fourth quarter, but could never tie or take the lead.

Paola Vazquez led the Fighting Knights (0-2) with 29 points. Her basket cut the Lions' lead to 74-73 with 8:08 remaining. Lynn, however, would not connect from the floor again until the final minute of play.

Five different UNA players scored during a 7-2 run to push the lead to eight at the 5:36 mark. The teams then made two free throws each before Panetti recorded a steal and drew a foul to go back to the line with 2:37 to play. Her to foul shots made the score 87-77 and the Lions maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

For the game, UNA was 31-of-57 (54.4 percent), but struggled from three-point range. Wallen and Darby Madden each hit a trey while Emma Wallen was 2-of-8 from long range.

Lynn's Sydney Fields tied the game in the closing seconds of the first half. Her steal and three-pointer from near midcourt knotted the score at 49-49 at the break. The Lions shot 63.6 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes of play.
