TAMPA DOWNS UNA MEN IN OVERTIME

TAMPA, Fla., – The University of North Alabama men's basketball team opened the 2017-18 season with a 90-81 overtime loss at Tampa Saturday at the GSC/SSC Challenge. After regulation ended in a 74-74 tie, the host Spartans outscored UNA 16-7 in the extra period to get the win in the season-opening game for both teams.
 
Tavaras Tolliver and Kendarius Smith combined for 43 points and the Lions shot 47.9 percent on the day. UNA, however, went 3-for-8 from the floor in overtime, including an 0-4 showing from three-point range.
 
Following a basket by Tolliver to tie the game at 78-78, the Lions went 1-for-7 over the final 3:15 of overtime. The Spartans used a 12-2 run to build a double-digit lead before a UNA free throw with 1.4 seconds remaining wrapped up the scoring.
 
Tolliver finished with 23 points, eight rebounds, six steals and five assists to lead the Lions. Smith had 20 points, including a trio of three-pointers.
 
The game featured 16 ties and 16 lead changes. Tampa took a 39-37 lead into the break. After a quick basket by Smith tied the game in the opening minute of the second half, neither team led by more than four points for the remainder of regulation.
 
The Lions overcame a 69-65 deficit in the final 2:19, tying the game at 70 and 72 before the home team grabbed a 74-72 advantage in the final minute of play. A jumper by Trenton Clayton with 13.1 seconds remaining tied the score one more time and UNA forced a turnover on the ensuing Tampa possession to send the game into overtime.
 
Sharwyn McGee just missed a double-double for the Lions with nine points and nine rebounds. Kendall Stafford added nine points and six boards for UNA.
 
Six players reached double figures for Tampa (1-0). The Spartan's Pat Bacon led all scorers with 27 points.
 
UNA will remain in Tampa to play Saint Leo on Sunday. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m. (EST).
