LIONS TOP VIRGIN ISLANDS 92-58

FLORENCE – Five players reached double figures in scoring as the University of North Alabama men's basketball team improved to 4-2 on the season with a 92-58 win over the Virgin Islands Tuesday evening at Flowers Hall. The fourth straight win is the final game before the Lions open Gulf South Conference play at West Alabama on Thursday.
 
Against the Buccaneers, UNA shot 49.3 percent from the floor, including eight three-point baskets. Kendarius Smith led all scorers with 17 points. The junior from Camden, Miss., added a game-high six assists on the night.
 
The Lions led wire to wire after opening the game on a 17-6 run. After UVI cut the lead to 29-21 at the 10:04 mark of the first half, Kendall Stafford and Tavaras Tolliver keyed another 8-0 run for UNA to push the lead to double digits. The Buccaneers would not threaten again.
 
North Alabama led 55-33 at the half and led by as many as 38 over the final 20 minutes of play. A three-pointer by Smith with 8:28 remaining capped a 15-3 spurt and gave the Lions their largest lead at 84-46.
 
Eleven different players saw action for UNA, with nine scoring on the night. Jeff Hodge scored 12 of his 15 points in the first half. Tolliver and Stafford each finished with 12 points. Tolliver added a season-best 15 rebounds. Adrian Smith rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 10 points.
 
North Alabama held a commanding 58-39 rebounding advantage, leading to 22 second-chance points for the game. The Lions also dominated points in the paint by a 50-20 margin.
 
UVI (0-10) was led by Jonathan Harley's 13 points.
 
UNA now turns its attention to GSC play, including upcoming road stops at West Alabama and Montevallo. The Lions begin league action Thursday at UWA. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at Pruitt Hall in Livingston.
