FLORENCE, Ala. -- After a four-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the University of North Alabama its first lead of the day at 5-3, the Lions could not hold it and dropped the Gulf South Conference series finale to Shorter, 9-5.
With the loss, UNA is now 9-5 overall and 5-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter improves to 8-5 overall and 1-5 in the GSC.
Shorter scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning and North Alabama got on the board with a run in the fifth. The Lions then scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth when a
Brandt Holland single to right with the bases loaded was misplayed, clearing the bases and allowing Holland to score as well. Holland was credited with two runs batted in on the hit.
UNA brought on closer
Channing Wall in the top of the ninth but five consecutive Hawks reached base and
Dylan Stewart allowed two additional hits as Shorter rallied for six runs and a 9-5 lead. Catcher Jack leech had the big blow with a three-run double.
North Alabama got one runner on base in the ninth but could not score.
UNA starter
Devan Traglia pitched eight complete innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. He was not involved in the decision. Wall (0-1) took the loss, giving up five runs, four earned, on two hits and two hit batters and did not retire a batter. Stewart pitched one inning and was touched for a run on two hits with two strikeouts.
UNA plays at Alabama A&M Tuesday at 1 p.m.
