TOP-SEED VALDOSTA STATE TOO MUCH FOR UNA MEN

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State shot 59 percent from the floor in the first half and finished the game with 22 three-point baskets in a 115-94 home victory over the University of North Alabama men's basketball team Tuesday in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament. With the loss, UNA closes its season with a 14-15 record.
 
The top-seeded and 16th-ranked Blazers used the sharp shooting in the first half to grab a big early lead and never let the Lions back in the game. VSU was 13-of-20 from three-point range in the first 20 minutes of play.
 
Holding a 21-16 lead with 13:57 remaining in the opening half, the Blazers got a three-pointer by Beau Justice to start an 18-5 run to take control. Another trey by Justice in the closing seconds of the half gave VSU a 59-36 lead at the break.
 
Valdosta State (25-4) led by as many as 37 in the second half. UNA was able to close the game on an 18-2 run over the final 3:54.
 
Justice and Jeremiah Hill combined for 15 three-pointers and 54 points with Hill tossing in a game-high 28 points.
 
UNA had five players reached double figures in scoring. DeAndre McKinnie led the way with 19 points while fellow senior Dimario Jackson scored 17 points for the Lions. Tavaras Tolliver added 13 points while Sharwyn McGee tossed in 12 points on the night. Austin Timms rounded out the top performers for UNA with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
 
After shooting 35 percent from the floor in the first half, North Alabama connected on 17-of-31 (54.8 percent) shots in the second half. Timms, UNA's third senior on the roster, did all of his scoring over the final 20 minutes of play.
