SOFTBALL LIONS SWEEP WEST ALABAMA 5-2, 5-3

FLORENCE – A pair of Gulf South Conference home wins over West Alabama gave the University of North Alabama softball team an 18-10 overall record and moved the team above .500 in league play at 8-6 on the year. UNA defeated the Tigers 5-2 and 5-3 on Saturday to break a three-game losing streak.

A three-run fourth inning was the difference in the first game, while the Lions built a 5-0 lead in the nightcap before holding off a late UWA rally. Five different UNA players recorded three hits on the day. Marissa Hancock was 3-for-7 at the plate and drove in two runs in each game.

In the opener, North Alabama led 2-1 before scoring three times in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out and runners at second and third, Sydney Sanders connected on a double to left field to drive in two runs. The Lions added another run on an RBI-ground out by Sabrina Gilliam to take a 5-1 lead.

West Alabama added a single run in the top of the fifth inning but would get no closer. Hillary Carpenter (9-4) pitched a complete game to get the win. She scattered eight hits and struck out six without issuing a walk in seven innings of work.

UNA struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. After a leadoff triple by Baily Nelson, Hancock drove home the game's first run with a single to center field.

West Alabama tied the game with a single run in the top of the third inning before the Lions regained the lead in the bottom of the frame. After leading off the inning with a single, Sanders scored on an RBI-single by Hancock to make the score 2-1.

Hancock and Sanders each finished the first game 2-for-3 at the plate. Nelson was 2-for-2.

In the second game, UNA scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning and two more in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. The Tigers were able to plate a run in the fifth inning and get a two-run home run in the seventh before coming up short.

Shelby Woodard was 2-for-2 with an RBI while Gilliam posted a 2-for-4 showing for the Lions. Raven Cole took a no-hitter into the fourth inning before finishing with three runs off five hits to get the win. She struck out five in seven innings of work to improve to 6-4 on the season.

The Lions got things going quickly at the plate. Nelson led off the bottom of the first with a single before scoring on an RBI-double by Gilliam. Gilliam then scored on a single up the middle by Woodard. Reagan Tittle wrapped up the scoring in the first inning. She reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. She then scored on a passed ball to give UNA a 3-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, the Lions started a two-out rally with a single to right center by Gilliam. Hancock then connected on a two-run home run to right center. The blast gave Hancock five homers on the year, tying her for the team lead with two other players.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game GSC series with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
