VALDOSTA, Ga. -- The University of North Alabama baseball team picked the wrong day to have one of its worst offensive outings of the season as the Lions scored just three runs on five hits in dropping a Gulf South Conference double-header at Valdosta State, 4-1 and 7-2.
UNA entered the weekend series with a chance to earn either an out-right GSC title of share of the regular-season crown with three wins over the Blazers and at least two losses from Delta State. The Statesmen dropped their Friday night game at Mississippi College, pulling UNA within a game of first place. With the two losses, the Lions are now 32-17 overall and 21-11 in GSC play. With West Alabama winning its series with Alabama-Huntsville, UNA is now tied with UWA in second place and will need a win in Sunday's finale with Valdosta State to earn the No. 2 seed for the upcoming GSC Tournament.
In the opener at VSU, UNA starter
Tyler Joyner carried a one-hitter into the eighth inning but the Lions trailed 2-1. Valdosta State got a run in the first inning on a leadoff walk, an error on a pick-off attempt and an RBI-ground-out.
North Alabama tied the game in the second inning when
Kyle Hubbuch singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly.
VSU finally got its first hit of the game in the fourth inning on a home run by Tyler Homer.
After UNA stranded two runners in the top of the eighth inning, the Blazers added two runs in the bottom of the frame. A single, another failed pickoff attempt, a walk and a stolen base gave the Blazers two runners in scoring position. Luke Suchon then drove them in with a two-run single to make it 4-0.
Joyner (10-2) took the loss despite throwing his seventh complete-game of the season. He allowed four runs on four hits with five walks and seven strikeouts.
UNA managed just three hits in the game.
In the nightcap, VSU jumped out to a 6-0 lead off UNA starter
Lane Wallace with four runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth. After one run scored after a triple, a walk and an error, Ryan Slaughter hit a three-run homer to make it 4-0 in the third. In the fourth, Chipper Andzel singled and Dalton Murray followed with a two-run home run to make it 6-0.
UNA's only runs came in the fifth as
Tate Mathis reached on an error and scored on another error off the bat of
Ben Cooley. Cooley then scored on an RBI-single by
Chris Blakey. It was one of just two hits for the Lions in the game.
Valdosta State added an insurance run in the sixth off UNA reliever
Shane Priest to make it 7-2.
Wallace (5-4) took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, in three and a third innings. He walked four and struckout four.
Priest pitched the final two and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on two hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
With 17 strikeouts on the day, the UNA pitching staff set a new school single-season record for strikeouts in a season with 381. The previous record was 376 in 57 games in 2012. This year's staff broke the record in just 49 games.
The Lions and Blazers play the final game of the series Sunday at noon.
