VALDOSTA, Ga. -- The University of North Alabama couldn't hold an early 2-0 lead and dropped its regular-season finale at Valdosta State, 5-2.
The Lions close their regular-season with a 32-18 overall record and 21-12 Gulf South Conference mark.
UNA will be the No. 3 seed in the upcoming GSC Tournament in Cleveland, Miss., which begins May 6. Delta State claimed the GSC regular-season title and top seed in the tournament, followed by West Alabama, UNA, Valdosta State, Union, West Florida, Mississippi College and Alabama-Huntsville.
UNA took the early lead with two runs in the second inning. With two outs,
Logan Carter reached on an error and
Brandt Holland brought him in with a two-run home run.
Valdosta State got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning as Luke Suchon singled and later scored on an error.
The Blazers took the lead in the fifth with two more runs. Kendall Herron was hit-by-pitch and Chipper Andzel singled. Herron then scored on a sacrifice fly by Suchon and Andzel scored on an RBI-single by Tyler Homer.
North Alabama mounted a threat in the top of the seventh inning with runners on second and third with just one out but couldn't score.
VSU added insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth when Cody Ilgenfritz singled and stole second and scored on a double by Herron. Herron then scored on a single by Andzel.
UNA was out-hit 11 to six in the game.
Devan Traglia (6-2) took the loss for UNA, pitching five innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits with four walks and one strikeout.
Dylan Stewart pitched two and two-thirds innings and gave up two runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
Channing Wall pitched the final one-third inning but gave up two hits and walked a batter.
North Alabama won nine of its 11 GSC series in 2017, losing only to Delta State and Valdosta State.
