VSU SOFTBALL SWEEPS LIONS

VALDOSTA, Ga., – The University of North Alabama softball team was held to a single earned run in a pair of Gulf South Conference losses at Valdosta State on Saturday. VSU rallied for a 4-3 win in eight innings in the opener before getting an 8-0 mercy-rule win in the second game. The two defeats leave UNA with a 30-16 overall record and 20-12 mark in GSC play.

Brandy Morgan gave the Blazers the walk-off victory in the opener with a two-run home run in the bottom of the eight inning. The blast came moments after UNA had taken a 3-2 lead off Reagan Tittle's solo homer in the top of the frame.

North Alabama had rallied after trailing 2-1 throughout most of the game. With two outs in the top of the seventh, McKenna Ray doubled to right center. She then scored on Bailey Nelson's ground ball to third that was mishandled to tie the game.

UNA's other run was also unearned. Back-to-back fielding errors by the Blazers allowed Amy Carden to score in the top of the fifth inning.

Ray finished the opener 3-for-3 with a run scored. Hannah Shollenberger was 2-for-4 at the plate. Hannah Bodenhorn (6-2) took the loss in the circle. She scattered five hits with six strikeouts in 7.1 innings of work.

VSU wasted little time taking control in the second game. The Blazers plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning and four in the second to take a 6-0 lead. Chelsea Canara's grand slam in the second highlighted the frame for the home team.

Single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings ended the game via the eight-run mercy rule. The Blazers got an RBI-single and a bases-loaded walk.

UNA was held to just two hits by VSU's Kasie Johnson, who retired 15 of 17 batters faced. Nelson and Tittle each singled but were stranded at first.

Hillary Carpenter (14-7) took the pitching loss for UNA. She worked the first 1.1 innings.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game series with a single game at 1 p.m. (EST) on Sunday.
