VSU RALLIES TO WIN SERIES FINALE OVER UNA

VALDOSTA, Ga., – For the second time in the last three games, Valdosta State scored twice in its last at-bat to rally for a one-run victory over the University of North Alabama softball team. A two-run seventh inning gave the Blazers a 5-4 win over UNA to close the regular season and cap a three-game sweep.

With the loss, the Lions close the regular season with a 30-17 record and will enter the upcoming Gulf South Conference Tournament as the No. 5 seed. VSU earned the No. 4 seed, setting up a fourth consecutive meeting between the two teams in the opening round.

On Sunday, UNA was able to plate single runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to take a 4-3 lead. Valdosta State, however, answered in the bottom of the frame. After back-to-back hits tied the game and put the winning run on second base, VSU sacrificed Hayley Cruthers to third to set up Tana McDaniels' deep fly ball to score the winning run.

In the series opener, the Blazers scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally for a 4-3 win.

In the finale, UNA got single runs in the top of the first, third, sixth and seventh frames. Bailey Nelson led of the game with a single and later scored on an RBI-single by Sydney Sanders to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.

After VSU tied the game in the bottom of the second, the Lions regained the lead in the third. Amy Carden reached on an error before scoring on Hannah Shollenberger's single to left center.

Following a two-run fifth inning that gave the Blazers a 3-2 lead, UNA answered again with three straight singles in the sixth. Anna Gayle Norris drove in the run, scoring Reagan Tittle from second base. Shelby Woodard then led off the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run to left center, giving the Lions the 4-3 lead.

Norris led UNA at the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Raven Cole took the loss in the circle for UNA, falling to 9-7 on the year.

The 2017 GSC Tournament will be in Huntsville on the campus of UAH. A complete bracket, along with game times will be released Monday.
