SOFTBALL FALLS IN OPENING ROUND OF GSC TOURNEY

HUNTSVILLE – Valdosta State hit four home runs off three different North Alabama pitchers to rally for an 8-7 victory Saturday in the opening round of the 2017 Gulf South Conference Tournament. The early exit from the tourney leaves the Lions with a 30-18 record with the team waiting to see if it receives an NCAA Tournament bid.

The rematch of the 2016 GSC championship game resulted in the Blazers' fourth win over UNA this season. It was also the third one-run victory over the Lions this season as VSU (37-16) advances to the semi-final round to face top seed and tournament host UAH on Sunday.

On Saturday, UNA led 4-0 in the second inning and held a 5-2 lead in the top of the fourth. The Blazers, however, plated six runs over the next three frames to take the lead. The game featured 15 runs off 21 hits.

Shelby Woodard gave UNA the early lead with an RBI-single in the top of the fourth. The hit scored Reagan Title from third after she reached base on an error. After an RBI-double by Amy Carden hit the right field fence, the Lions got two more runs on Hannah Shollenberger's single to right center.

VSU answered in the bottom of the inning with Haley Garrett's two-run home run to make the score 4-2.

Following a scoreless third inning, Woodard led off the top of the fourth with a solo homer to left field. The Blazers, however, continued to keep pace. A two-run bottom of the fourth inning cut the UNA lead to 5-4 and chased UNA starter Raven Cole from the circle.

An RBI-double by Title in the top of the fifth increased the lead to 6-4 before a three-run inning in the bottom of the frame gave VSU the lead for good. After the Blazers increased their lead to 8-6 with a run in the sixth inning, the Lions got a run in the top of the seventh before leaving the tying run at second when the game ended.

UNA recorded 11 hits on the day. Shollenberger, a true freshman from Florence, went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Woodard, Bailey Nelson and Sydney Sanders each went 2-for-4 at the plate. Woodard and Anna Gayle Norris also had two RBI. Hannah Bodenhorn (6-3) took the pitching loss for the Lions. She faced six batters in the bottom of the fifth when VSU took the lead.

The NCAA will air and online selection show at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 8.
