CLINTON, Miss. -- A five-run rally in the eighth inning gave North Alabama a brief lead but the Lions couldn't hold it as Mississippi College rallied for a 7-5 win over the Lions in the final game of their Gulf South Conference series.
UNA is now 23-15 overall and 15-9 in the GSC. Despite the loss, the Lions have won seven of their eight Gulf South Conference series this spring, including downing MC two games to one.
Mississippi College took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on UNA starter
Devan Traglia but he would shutdown the Choctaws for the next six innings.
With MC still leading 2-0 in the top of the eighth, UNA scored five runs to take a 5-2 advantage.
Peyton Sockwell singled and
Tate Mathis added a pinch-hit single. After a
Ben Cooley sacrifice,
Chris Blakey ripped a two-run double to tie the game.
Payton Thomas singled and a three-run homer by
T.J. Lockett gave UNA a 5-2 lead.
The lead was short-lived as the Choctaws scored five of their own in the bottom of the eighth on two hits, two walks and three UNA errors. Traglia was pulled after allowing a double and a home run to open the inning.
Dylan Stewart then pitched just one third of an inning but walked two batters and gave up two runs (one earned).
Channing Wall pitched the final two-thirds of an inning, allowing one unearned run. Stewart (0-1) took the loss.
Mathis and
Drake Tucker led UNA with two hits each.
UNA hosts Montevallo for a single game on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Mike Lane Field.
