LIONS TOP SAINT LEO 10-4 TO OPEN NCAA REGIONAL

SAINT LEO, Fla.., – The University of North Alabama softball team scored six runs in the top of the eighth inning during a 10-4 victory over host Saint Leo Thursday in the opening round of the NCAA South 2 Regional. The victory keeps UNA (31-18) in the winner's bracket and sets up a second-round show down Friday at Noon (EST) against the winner of the UAH/Lee game.

Against Saint Leo, the Lions rallied twice, overcoming 3-0 and 4-3 deficits. After a single UNA run in the top of the sixth inning tied the game at 4-4, a scoreless seventh inning set the stage for the six-run eighth frame.

North Alabama sent 12 batters to the plate in the eighth, getting six hits and taking advantage of three Saint Leo errors. Amy Carden started the rally with a leadoff single. She reached third on an SLU error before Sabrina Gilliam's single down the left line gave the Lions a 5-4 lead.

Two more errors proved costly for the home team. Bailey Nelson reach on an error and scored on another to make the score 6-4. Anna Gayle Norris then drove in two runs with a single through the right side before SLU recorded its first out.

Pinch runner McKenna Ray reached third before scoring on Marissa Hancock's sacrifice fly to give UNA a 9-4 lead before Nelson returned to the plate with the bases loaded and drew a walk to wrap up the scoring.

Hillary Carpenter recorded three outs in the bottom of the eighth to wrap up the complete-game victory. She scattered 11 hits over eight innings to improve to 15-7 on the year. Her four strikeouts also gave her 442 for her career, tying Jennifer Sexton for the UNA career record.

North Alabama faced a 3-0 deficit early after Saint Leo plated a run in the bottom of the first inning and two more in the second. The Lions were able to get back in the game with a two-run fourth inning. Nelson led off the frame with a single and later scored on Norris' RBI-single through the right side. Hannah Shollenberger later drew a bases-loaded walk to cut the SLU lead to 3-2.

After an RBI-double by Sydney Sanders tied the game in the top of the fifth, Saint Leo regained a 4-3 lead with a run in the bottom of the inning. In the sixth inning, Nelson walked with the bases loaded to tie the game.

UNA produced 14 hits of its own. Nelson, Norris and Sanders each went 2-for-4 at the plate. Reagan Tittle and Shelby Woodard each went 2-for-5 for the Lions. Norris also finished the day with three RBI.
