UNA WOMEN FALL AT UAH IN OVERTIME

HUNTSVILLE – Alabama Huntsville tied the game with less than a second remaining in regulation, then outscored North Alabama 15-9 in overtime to record an 87-81 victory Saturday afternoon in Gulf South Conference women's basketball action. With the loss, UNA falls to 16-2 on the season and 9-2 in GSC play. It was also the first road loss of the season for the Lions.
 
With UNA holding a 72-71 lead in the closing seconds. The Chargers drew a foul on a three-point shot with .5 seconds remaining. Morgan Tipton missed the first two foul shots before sinking the third one to tie the game and force overtime.
 
The lead changed only three times in the extra period. After UAH took a one-point lead on a free throw, a basket by Ivy Wallen put UNA ahead 74-73 at the 4:05 mark. The Chargers then took control with seven straight points and never trailed again.
 
Wallen finished with a game-high 30 points before fouling out in the closing minutes of overtime.
 
UAH led 36-35 at the half before a 25-18 run by the Lions gave UNA a 60-54 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
 
North Alabama led by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter. A basket and free throw by Kenysha Coulson completed a three-point play to put the Lions ahead 67-57 with 6:44 remaining. UNA, however, did not score again for more than six minutes while the Chargers used a 12-0 run to grab a 69-67 lead in the final minute of play.
 
Michaela DeKilder answered for the Lions with a three-point play of her own. Her basket and free throw with 38.3 seconds to play gave UNA a one-point lead. After getting a stop on defense, North Alabama stretched the lead to 72-69 with two free throws by Wallen with 18.7 seconds remaining.
 
UAH got a basket by Katie Speegle with less than five seconds to go, then got one more chance after forcing a turnover on the Lions' ensuing possession to set up Tipton's trip to the free throw line.
 
Emma Wallen and Brittany Panetti added 13 points each for the Lions. DeKilder finished with 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
 
Speegle led UAH (11-7 overall, 5-6 GSC) with 26 points.
 
UNA will host Wet Florida on Jan. 25. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
