NO. 24 UNION HANDS UNA WOMEN FIRST LOSS

FLORENCE – Chelsey Shumpert scored 31 points as No. 24 Union held off host North Alabama 65-62 Saturday in Gulf South Conference women's basketball action. With the first loss of the season, No. 21 UNA falls to 13-1 overall and 5-1 in GSC play.
 
In the battle of the last two teams undefeated in GSC play, the Bulldogs grabbed sole possession of first place in the league standings. North Alabama trailed 35-30 at the half and was down by as many as nine in the third quarter before rallying to stay within striking distance.
 
The Lions trailed by three after Union hit 1-of-2 free throws with seven seconds remaining. The Bulldogs used their remaining foul to give as UNA worked the final possession. Emma Wallen's three-point attempt at the buzzer, however, was off the mark, ending the game in regulation.
 
Brittany Panetti led UNA with 17 points and eight rebounds.
 
North Alabama led 18-10 at the end of the first quarter and led 23-12 after a basket by Kenysha Coulson early in the second. Union, however, was in control for the rest of the period. A 23-5 run by the Bulldogs gave the visitors a 35-28 lead in the final minute of the half. UNA went 2-for-11 during the stretch with seven turnovers.
 
A basket by Ansley Eubank cut the deficit to 35-30 at the break.
 
Union led 44-35 with 7:24 left in the third quarter and held a 50-42 lead at the 5:05 mark. Panetti then sparked an 11-4 run with five points. Her basket in the final minute of the period made the score 54-53. The junior from Katy, Texas then gave UNA its first lead of the second half with a layup early in the fourth quarter.
 
The two teams traded baskets before a free throw by Panetti tied the score at 59-59 with 5:17 remaining. The Lions forced a turnover on the ensuing possession but could not take the lead. Union answered with a basket at the 3:54 mark and never relinquished the lead.
 
Wallen added 13 points for the Lions while Ivy Wallen notched 11 points, nine rebounds and nine assists.  Michaela DeKilder also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. For the game, UNA was 4-of-25 from three-point range.
 
Shumpert, the nation's leading scorer, had 24 points at the half before being held to seven over the final two quarters.
 
UNA will host Christian Brothers on Jan 9. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
