FIRST-PLACE KENNESAW STATE EDGES UNA VOLLEYBALL 3-1

KENNESAW, Ga., – Kennesaw State held on to first place in the ASUN Conference volleyball standings with a 3-1 win over visiting North Alabama Friday evening at the KSU Convocation Center. With the win, the Owls improved to 18-4 overall and 9-0 in league play while UNA fell to 2-16 overall and 0-9 in ASUN matches.
 
North Alabama stayed within striking distances throughout the match and held KSU to its lowest team hitting percentage of the season. The Owls hit .161 as a team in the 25-18, 25-20, 19-25, 25-20 victory. UNA connected on a .188 clip as a team.
 
KSU used a late surge to pull away and win the opening set. The Owls held a slim 21-18 lead before closing the game with four straight points.
 
North Alabama raced out to a 6-1 lead in the second set before the home team rallied. After tying the game at 8-8, KSU took its first lead on a kill by Lauren Chastang. The Lions were able to stay within striking distance, but could never regain the lead.
 
After Kennesaw State scored the first point of the third set, the Lions scored the next two and never trailed again. Christina Ellwanger had five kills in the frame as UNA stayed alive with the 25-19 victory.
 
The Owls scored the first five points of the fourth set and held off a late UNA rally to win the match. The Lions had 14 kills in the final frame before coming up short.
 
Ellwanger tied for a match-high with 14 kills on the night. The sophomore from Simpsonville, S.C.. also hit .286 on the night. Michay Jackson added a career-high 12 kills for the Lions while Jayden Davila-McClary rounded out the top offensive performances with 37 assists.
 
Defensively, Genesis Benítez led the way with 11 digs while Davila-McClary and Emma Ellis turned in 10 digs each. Malaisia Stallworth also posted five blocks for the match.
 
UNA will return home to host Lipscomb in ASUN play on Tuesday. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
