FLORENCE, Ala. – A Hail-Mary pass attempt on the final play of the game fell incomplete and the University of North Alabama came out on the short end of a 24-19 decision to West Florida at Braly Stadium.
North Alabama led for most of the first half before West Florida tied it at 10-10 by intermission. The Argonauts then led for most of the second half and pushed their advantage to 11 at 24-13 with 14:46 left in the game. The Lions managed to cut the lead to 24-19 with a two-yard
Damon Cox TD run with 6:25 left and then had one final scoring opportunity after the Argonauts missed on a 27-yard field goal attempts with just 39 seconds remaining.
UNA drove to the UWF 26-yard line with one second remaining and
Christian Lopez fired a final pass attempt that sailed just out of the end zone.
With the loss, North Alabama falls to 3-3 overall. West Florida, ranked 11
th in the NCAA Division II, improved to 5-1.
UNA finished with 423 total yards as Lopez completed 25 of 31 passes for 261 yards and Cox rushed 14 times for 94 yards.
The Argonauts gained 354 total yards.
UNA was hurt by 13 penalties for 128 yards and one lost fumble on a punt return in the fourt quarter.
North Alabama scored on its opening possession of the game as Lopez hit
Cortez Hall with a 12-yard touchdown pass at 12:25 of the first quarter. UWF's Austin Williams kicked a field goal with four seconds left in the quarter to make it 7-3.
UNA's
Chandler Carrera hit a career-long 41-yard field goal at 7:55 of the second quarter to push the Lions advantage to 10-3. UWF's Sam Vaughn later hit Ezra Saffold with a 38-yard TD pass at 1:11 of the second quarter to tie the game at 10-10.
Carrera hit a 30-yard field goal with 11:34 left in the third quarter to put UNA back on top 13-10 but the Argonauts answered with a touchdown drive capped by a two-yard TD run by Vaughn. The score put UWF up 17-13 with 8:05 left in the third.
West Florida extended its lead with an 18-yard TD pass from Vaughn to Quentin Randolph with 14:46 left in the game, making the score 24-13.
UNA pieced together a 10-play, 80-yard drive to set up Cox's TD with 6:25 left.
North Alabama hosts Mississippi College on October 13 for Homecoming at 6 p.m.
