FLORENCE, Ala. – Entering the day hitting just .243, the University of North Alabama scored 16 runs on 25 hits to sweep a Gulf South Conference double-header from West Florida, 4-2 and 12-5 at Mike Lane Field.
With the sweep, UNA improves to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in the GSC. West Florida is now 5-8 overall and 1-2 in the GSC.
UNA managed just two hits in Sunday's game against the Argonauts that the Lions dropped 5-0.
In Monday's double-header, UNA ripped 11 hits in the opener and left 13 runners on base but still pulled out a 4-2 win to back the pitching of
Shane Priest and
Channing Wall. In the nightcap, UNA took a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back on the way to a 12-5 rout that included 14 hits.
Down 1-0 in the second inning of game one, UNA's
Peyton Sockwell walked and scored on a
Tate Mathis RBI-single. Mathis then scored after a
T.J. Lockett single that included a run-down. Lockett then made it 3-0 when he scored on a
Kyle Hubbuch RBI-single.
Lockett, who was seven-for-nine on the day with four runs scored, then ripped his first home run of the season to left in the fourth inning.
Priest gave up two hits and two walks to produce a UWF run in the seventh but he left the game with a 4-2 lead after seven. Wall then came on to record his third save of the season with two scoreless innings. Priest (2-1) got the win, allowing two runs on six hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts. Wall allowed just one hit with a walk and a strikeout.
Lockett was four-for-five in the game.
North Alabama scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning of the nightcap on two hits, two hit batters and a base on balls.
Brandt Holland,
Peyton Sockwell and
Ben Cooley all drove in runs in the inning.
UWF got a single run in the second and UNA answered with a run in the bottom of the frame on a
Reid Homan single and a Hubbuch RBI-single.
West Florida scored two more runs in the fourth to make it 5-3 but UNA answered with seven in the bottom of the fourth on six hits and five UWF errors. Hubbuch, Holland, Cooley and
Tate Mathis all drove in runs to give UNA a 12-3 advantage.
West Florida got a solo home run in the fifth by Robert Lopez and added a run in the sixth but could get no closer.
UNA starter
Lane Wallace (3-1) got the win, allowing four runs on nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Josh Stillman pitched the final two innings, giving up one run on two hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Hubbuch was three-for-three with two runs scored and two RBI and Lockett was three-for-four with two runs scored.
North Alabama plays at Union Tuesday in a non-conference game.
