LIONS COME UP SHORT IN FIRST ROUND OF GSC TOURNEY

MEMPHIS, Tenn., – Christian Brothers shot over 60 percent from the floor in each half and hit 15 three-point baskets in a 96-76 home win over North Alabama Tuesday in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament. With the loss, UNA closes out the 2017-18 season with a 15-13 record.
 
Six different players connected from three-point range for CBU (21-8), including six by Joe Laravie, who finished with a game-high 31 points. The Bucs got treys from four different players in the first eight minutes of the game and quickly grabbed a 24-11 lead.
 
Kendall Stafford responded for the Lions with a basket and free throw to convert a three-point play and cut the lead to 24-14 with 11:01 remaining in the half. Christian Brothers, however, continued its hot start.
 
After a three-pointer by Stafford cut the CBU lead to 34-21 at the 5:52 mark, CBU closed the half on a 13-5 run. A dunk in the final minute of play gave the home team a 47-26 lead at the break.
 
In the second half, UNA was able to match the Bucs on offense, but could not get stops. Stafford scored seven points during a 13-4 UNA run to close the gap to 12 points. Two free throws by Jeff Hodge made the score 53-41 with 16:04 remaining. The Lions, however, would get no closer. CBU responded with another trey by Laravie and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
 
Christian Brothers finished the game 35-of-57 from the floor and 15-of-33 from three-point range. The Bucs also held a 23-8 advantage in bench scoring. UNA did hold a commanding 42-29 edge in rebounding.
 
Stafford led UNA with 19 points. Tavaras Tolliver added 15 points for the Lions while Sharwyn McGee turned in another double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Hodge wrapped his four-year playing career at North Alabama with 12 points. The senior from Birmingham leaves the program with 1,048 career points, ranking him No. 20 on the program's all-time scoring list.
