UNA WOMEN FALL IN FIRST ROUND OF GSC TOURNAMENT

FLORENCE – North Alabama shot 29 percent from the floor and West Alabama was able to dominate in the paint as the Tigers came away with a 70-65 upset win over the Lions Tuesday in the first round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament at Flowers Hall. With a 24-4 record on the season, UNA will now wait to see where it plays in the opening round of the NCAA South Regional. West Alabama advances to the GSC semi-final round Saturday in Birmingham.

On Tuesday, the Tigers built an early lead and maintained the advantage throughout the contest. UWA outscored the Lions 38-24 in the paint and held a commanding 54-37 rebounding advantage.

West Alabama was able to build a double-digit lead in the first quarter before a basket by Michaela DeKilder in the final minute of play made the score 25-16 at the end of the period. After a three-point basket by the Tigers early in the second quarter briefly extended the lead to 12, UNA used a 10-2 run to close the gap.

Darby Madden scored eight points during the spurt. Her three-pointer at the 5:25 mark made the score 30-26. The two teams traded scores down the stretch, but the Lions went without a field goal for the final 2:56 of the half. A three-pointer by the Tigers with 10 seconds remaining gave the visitors a 39-32 lead at the break.

West Alabama appeared to be pulling away, stretching the lead to 60-48 midway through the fourth quarter. The Lions, however, had one more push. A basket by Brittany Panetti capped a 10-0 run and UNA had a chance to tie or take the lead after getting a stop on the ensuing possession. The Tigers, however, got a defensive rebound and connected on two free throws at the other end to extend the lead to 64-60 with 2:31 remaining.

A basket by Emma Wallen in the final minute of play cut the lead to 66-64, but UWA answered Elaine Field converted a three-point play. UNA could not connect from the floor the rest of the way while the Tigers hit two more free throws to put the game out of reach.

Wallen led North Alabama with 22 points. Panetti added 14 points and six rebounds. Madded also reached double figures with 10 points on the night.

Tazsa Garrett-Hammett led West Alabama (14-14) with 17 points.
