LATE BASKET LIFTS UNA MEN PAST UNION

JACKSON, Tenn., – A basket and free throw by Tavaras Tolliver with 4.6 seconds remaining gave North Alabama a 76-74 lead and Union missed a three-point attempt as time expired, giving the UNA men's basketball team a two-point victory Saturday evening in Gulf South Conference play. With the win, UNA improves to 11-11 on the season with a 6-9 mark in GSC games.

The game featured two ties and four lead changes in the final minute of playing time. After taking a 40-32 lead into the break and maintaining the lead throughout most of the second half, UNA found itself trailing 72-71 after a Union basket with 50 seconds remaining.

A basket by Sharwyn McGee put the Lions back on top before the Bulldogs' Nick Velasquez gave the home team the lead again with two free throws with just under nine seconds left.

The Lions inbounded the ball and got it to Tolliver, who drove the lane and connected on a runner after drawing a foul. The junior from Scottsboro hit the ensuing free throw to give UNA the 76-74 lead and a three-point attempt by Velasquez at the buzzer was off the mark.

For the game, North Alabama shot 48.3 percent from the floor. Union was able to stay within striking distance by connecting on 10 three-pointers, including six in the second half.

Kendall Stafford led four players in double figures for UNA with 17 points. McGee had 15 points and 15 rebound while Kendarius Smith also scored 15 points. Jeff Hodge rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 14 points.

Todd Barnes scored 18 points to lead Union (9-14 overall, 3-12 GSC). The Bulldogs were also 18-of-18 from the free throw line.
