LIONS RALLY TO KNOCK OFF NO. 10 UNION 78-72

JACKSON, Tenn., – After by trailing by as many as 19 points in the first half, the University of North Alabama women's basketball team rallied over the final two quarters to post a 78-72 win at 10th-ranked Union Saturday afternoon.  
 
Three players reached double digits in scoring in the battle of nationally-ranked teams as the Lions improved to 20-2 on the season and 13-2 in GSC play. The UNA victory also snapped a 16-game winning streak by the Bulldogs and represented Union's first loss of the season in conference play.
 
Brittany Panetti scored 21 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to record game-high totals in both categories.
 
The Lions trailed 21-9 at the end of the first quarter and faced a 34-15 deficit with 4:26 remaining in the first half. UNA, however, closed the second period on a 7-0 run to enter the break trailing 34-22.
 
North Alabama continued to chip away at the lead in the third quarter. After shooting 24 percent in the opening half, the Lions were 20-of-31 (64.5 percent) from the floor over the final 20 minutes of play.
 
A three-point basket by Darby Madden cut the lead to 54-52 in the closing seconds of the third quarter.  Union's Chelsey Shumpert then added two free throws with less than a second remaining to stretch the lead back to four heading into the final period.
 
UNA used an 8-1 run to start the fourth quarter to grab its first lead of the game. A three-pointer by Savannah Stults gave the Lions a 60-57 lead with 8:35 remaining.
 
The lead changed three more times down the stretch as Union built a 72-64 lead on a jumper by Shumpert at the 3:29 mark. The Bulldogs would not score again.
 
A basket by Panetti and another trey by Stults cut the lead to three before a steal and layup by Kenysha Coulson made the score 72-71 with 1:26 remaining. UNA got another defensive stop before Emma Wallen connected from three-point range to give the Lions a 74-72 lead in the final minute of play.
 
Union missed shots on its next two possession while Wallen and Coulson each hit a pair of free throws to seal the win.
 
Coulson finished with a season-high 17 points. The sophomore from Huntsville added eight rebounds and seven assists for UNA. Wallen, who drew the assignment of guarding Shumpert and held the nation's leading scorer to 17 points, added 16 points for the Lions. Stults also scored nine points after going 3-of-4 from three-point range.
 
Sara Lytle led Union (21-2 overall, 14-1 GSC) with 20 points on the day.
 
UNA will return home for its next three contests, beginning with a game on Monday, Feb. 5, against Montevallo. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
