MONTEVALLO, Ala. -- After winning its first three Gulf South Conference baseball series of the season, the University of North Alabama dropped a GSC road double-header at Montevallo Saturday, falling 10-5 in the opener and 4-3 in the nightcap.
With the losses, UNA is now 14-10 overall and 7-4 in the GSC. Montevallo improved to 18-8 overall and 8-4 in the GSC.
The Lions and Falcons play the final game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
In the opener, Montevallo took a 1-0 lead in the first inning before UNA got back-to-back home runs in the fourth by
Kyle Hubbuch and
Brandt Holland. It was Hubbuch's ninth of the season and 36th of his career. It was Hollan'd second of the season.
Montevallo scored two runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth and UNA tied it at 3-3 in the fifth on a
T.J. Lockett RBI-single. The Falcons then exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth with the big blast coming on a three-run home run by Sebastian Samuels.
UNA got a solo home run from Holland in the sixth and scored a run on an error in the eighth but it wasn't enough.
UNA starter
Tyler Joyner (4-3) took the loss, allowing nine runs on 11 hits in 4.2 innings of work. He walked three and struckout four.
Josh Stillman pitched the final 3.1 innings and allowed one run on three hits.
In the nightcap, UNA scored two runs in the first inning on a
Peyton Sockwell RBI-single and
Kyle Hubbuch walked and scored on a wild pitch.
The Lions held the 2-0 lead into the second inning before the Falcons loaded the bases with no outs. UNA starter
Lane Wallace managed to work his way out of the jam, allowing just one run to score on a sacrifice fly.
The Falcons tied it with a run in the fourth but UNA went back on top in the top of the fifth.
Tate Mathis doubled and scored when Matt Homan reached on an error.
Montevallo tied the game again in the bottom of the fifth on a Collin Depree home run and the Falcons scored the eventual winning run in the bottom of the sixth on a hit batter and an fielding error by the Lions.
Wallace (4-2) took the loss for UNA, allowing four runs on five hits in six complete innings. He walked four and struckout four.
