SOFTBALL FALLS TWICE TO MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE

FLORENCE – Mississippi College used a big inning to rally for a win in the first game, then completed the sweep over North Alabama with a 10-1 mercy-rule victory in Game Two Friday in Gulf South Conference softball action. The 3-2, 10-1 sweep represents the first back-to-back losses of the season for UNA, which falls to 23-4. The Lions also suffer their first losses in GSC play, falling to 14-2 on the year.

In the opener, Mississippi College scored all three runs in the top of the fifth inning to get the victory and break UNA's 21-game winning streak. The Lions led 1-0 after Reagan Tittle led off the second with a hit and later scored on Bailey Nelson's infield single.

The Choctaws, however, answered in the fifth, opening the frame with a double and a triple to tie the game. The visitors also scored on an error and added an RBI-single to take a 3-1 lead.

Harley Stokes led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to pull the Lions to within 3-2, but UNA left runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings.

North Alabama out-hit MC, but stranded nine runners. The Choctaws also turned three double-plays in the game.

Nelson finished the opener 3-for-4 with an RBI. Stokes was also 2-for-3 at the plate. Megan Garst (10-2) took the pitching loss after working seven innings. She struck out nine and allowed two earned runs off five hits.

A seven-run fourth inning broke the game open for Mississippi College in the second game. The Choctaws led 1-0 before sending 12 batters to the plate in the frame. Six this and one UNA error later, the visitors had an 8-0 lead.

A solo home run by Meleah Hargett allowed UNA to avoid the mercy-rule defeat for one inning. It was the first career homer for the freshman from Hayden. The Choctaws, however, answered with two runs in the top of the sixth, and ended the game when the Lions failed to score in the bottom of the inning.

Hargett and Kara Brewer had two hits each to represent four of UNA's five hits in the nightcap. Laken Distefano (9-1) suffered her first pitching loss of the season after working the first 3.1 innings. She allowed six runs off seven hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts.

North Alabama will try to salvage the three-game series on Saturday with a single game at 1 p.m.
