SOFTBALL LIONS TOP CHOCTAWS 8-2

FLORENCE – North Alabama hit four home runs and got another solid pitching performance during an 8-2 home win over Mississippi College Saturday in Gulf South Conference softball action. Harley Stokes homered twice as the Lions improved to 24-4 overall and 15-2 in GSC play.
 
UNA took an early lead with a single run in the bottom of the first inning. Meleah Hargett doubled and reached third before an infield single by Hannah Shollenberger drove in the run.
 
The Lions increased their lead with a four-run third inning. Alex Brown singled to lead off the frame. She later scored from third on a sacrifice squeeze bunt by Kara Brewer. Shollenberger drove in another run on a sacrifice fly to right field before Stokes connected on a two-run home run. The shot to dead center cleared the surrounding 300-foot fence and gave UNA a 5-0 lead.
 
After Mississippi College plated a single run in the top of the fifth, Stokes and the Lions responded in the bottom of the inning. Her two-out shot down the left line hit the foul pole. She finished the day 3-for-3 at the plate with a trio of RBI.
 
North Alabama closed out the scoring in the sixth inning with back-to-back solo home runs by Reagan Tittle and Katie Eakes. The Lions had 10 hits on the day. Bailey Nelson also finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.
 
Garst improved to 11-2 on the season. She scattered seven hits and struck out two in the complete-game victory.
 
UNA will step outside of GSC play for a home double-header against Spring Hill on Monday.
