LIONS CLAIM GSC SERIES WITH 12-8 WIN OVER MC

FLORENCE, Ala. – Kyle Hubbuch delivered a three-run double with two outs and the game tied in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the University of North Alabama to a 12-8 win over Mississippi College at Mike Lane Field. The win also gave UNA a 2-1 series victory over the Choctaws while lifting the Lions overall record to 18-11 overall and 10-5 in the Gulf South Conference.

UNA held a 5-0 lead early before the Choctaws rallied to take a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning. UNA tied it in the bottom of the sixth frame and both teams scored two in the seventh to make it 8-8.

Tate Mathis led off the bottom of the eighth with a double, Davis Elliott was hit-by-pitch and Ridge Watson walked to load the bases with no outs. After getting a force-out at home and a pop-up to first, MC reliever Tommy Taborda was one out away from working out of the jam. With a 2-1 count, Hubbuch drilled a ball off the center field fence to clear the bases and give UNA an 11-8 lead. Brandt Holland followed with a single to drive in Hubbuch and extend the lead to 12-8.

Channing Wall then retired the Choctaws in order in the ninth to seal the win.

Wall (2-1) got the win in three innings of relief. He allowed one run on two hits with two walks and one strikeout. Shane Priest started for UNA and pitched five scoreless innings before being roughed-up in the sixth. He pitched 5.1 innings and gave up six runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Bryant Claunch pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed a run on two hits.

UNA took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Ben Cooley reached on an error and Hubbuch singled. Cooley then scored on the back end of a double steal and Hubbuch scored on a sacrifice fly by Logan Carter.

T.J. Lockett singled in the third and stole second before scoring on a Hubbuch RBI-single.

A two-run homer by Davis Elliott in the fourth pushed UNA's lead to 5-0.

Mississippi College plated six runs in the sixth inning on five hits and two hit batters. UNA tied the game at 6-6 with an RBI-single from Elliott in the bottom of the sixth. The Choctaws then got a double to lead off the seventh to force Priest from the game. A Ty Alderman single and a Brandon Broussard sacrifice fly gave MC an 8-6 lead.

North Alabama tied the game in the bottom of the seventh as Payton Thomas drove in a run in a fielder's choice and Peyton Sockwell delivered a game-tying RBI single.

Hubbuch finished the game three-for-four with three runs scored and four runs batted in.
