LIONS SWEEP CHRISTIAN BROTHERS 6-0, 12-0

FLORENCE –The University of North Alabama softball team scored 18 runs off 25 hits Monday in a pair of victories over Christian Brothers. The 6-0 and 12-0 wins completed a three-game Gulf South Conference sweep where UNA outscored the Buccaneers 30-0 and improved to 37-4 on the season. The Lions also maintained first place in the GSC standings with a 24-2 league record.

Four different North Alabama pitchers combined on the two shutouts, limiting CBU to four hits on the day. As a unit, the UNA pitching staff has recorded 26 consecutive scoreless innings.

In the opener, Laken Distefano worked the first six innings in the circle to get the win. She took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before a single resulted in CBU's third base runner of the game. Distefano (13-1) retired the side and finished the day with eight strikeouts. Sharley Miller pitched a scoreless seventh inning for UNA.

At the plate, the Lions used a three-run seventh inning to pull away late. UNA scored twice in the top of the second and added another run in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. Katie Eakes led off the second with a solo home run and Sydney Sanders added an RBI-double to open the scoring.

In the fourth inning, Sanders drove in another run when her single through the left side scored Destiny Wright from third base.

Leading 3-0, UNA got three hits in the top of the seventh inning, including a leadoff double by Reagan Tittle. The Lions loaded the bases before a sacrifice fly by Eakes brought another run home. Hannah Shollenberger wrapped up the scoring with a two-run single.

Shollenberger, Sanders and Bailey Nelson had two hits each to lead the way at the plate.

North Alabama scored early and often in the second game, getting 12 runs off 14 hits. Megan Garst and Veronica Westfall each allowed a hit in the shutout. Garst got the win after working the first four innings and striking out six to improve to 17-2 on the season.

The Lions scored two runs each in the top of the second and third innings to take control. Westfall and Alex Brown each singled home runs in the second before the Lions used a two-out rally in the top of the third. Kara Brewer singled and later scored from first on a double to left center by Shollenberger. Eakes then singled up the middle to score another run and give UNA a 4-0 lead.

Shollenberger added another RBI-double in the fourth. Nelson and Meleah Hargett also drove in runs. A five-run sixth inning put the game out of reach and set the stage for another mercy-rule win. Brewer and Nelson each had run-scoring doubles and Katie Parr highlighted the frame with a three-run home run. She became the 13th different UNA player to homer this season.

Brewer finished the second game 3-for-4 at the plate. Shollenberger was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI. Nelson also drove in two runs on a 2-for-3 showing.

UNA will host Delta State next weekend. The two teams are schedule to play a double-header on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
