LIONS SWEEP DELTA STATE TO REACH 40 WINS

FLORENCE – A pair of wins over Delta State on the final regular-season home weekend of the season gave the University of North Alabama softball team a 40-4 record. UNA extended its winning streak to 17 straight games with a 4-3, 4-1 sweep and will close the regular season next weekend at UAH.

Katie Eakes hit a walk-off RBI-single in the first game to secure the win. UNA entered the bottom of the seventh inning tied at 3-3 before Meleah Hargett and Kara Brewer had back-to-back singles to lead off the frame. After a sacrifice bunt by Hannah Shollenberger moved the runners to second and third, DSU recorded the second out to bring Eakes to the plate. The sophomore from Mt. Juliet, Tenn., hit an 0-1 pitch up the middle to drive in the winning run.

The Lions scored their other three runs in the bottom of the first inning. After DSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the frame, Shollenberger hit a three-run home run to give UNA a 3-1 lead. The shot to dead center also scored Hargett and Brewer.

A two-run second inning by the Lady Statesmen tied the game before both starting pitchers settled in. Laken Distefano recorded the win for the Lions. The freshman from Florence scattered six hits over seven innings. She struck out three and allowed three runs to improve to 14-1 on the season.

At the plate, Hargett, Brewer and Veronica Westfall each posted 2-for-3 showings.

In the second game, North Alabama used a three-run fourth inning to take the lead for good. The Lions got RBI-singles by Katie Parr and Mackenzie Roberts before adding a sacrifice fly by Reagan Tittle to take a 4-1 lead.

Once UNA had the lead, Megan Garst pitched four shutout innings to get the win. She becomes the first place in the GSC to reach 20 victories this season with a 20-2 mark. The sophomore finished the complete game with five strikeouts and one run scored.

Hargett gave the Lions the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. After being hit by a pitch, she stole second before advancing to third base on a hit by Brewer. She scored on a throwing error as Brewer stole second to give UNA a 1-0 lead.

Delta State tied the game with a single run in the top of the third inning.

With a 27-2 record in Gulf South Conference play, UNA has already clinched first place in the league standings and will host the upcoming GSC Tournament.
