LIONS SPLIT TOP-25 SOFTBALL DOUBLE-HEADER

HUNTSVILLE – Fourth-ranked North Alabama got an eight-inning victory in the opener, but came up short in the second in a double-header split at No. 18 Alabama-Huntsville Saturday in Gulf South Conference softball action. The 6-4 and 7-9 split gives UNA a 41-5 overall record, including a 28-3 GSC mark heading into the regular-season finale on Sunday.

In the opener, UNA head coach Ashley Cozart recorded her 400th career victory. Reagan Tittle's two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning proved to be the difference in the back and fourth game.

Starting pitcher Megan Garst took a 4-0 lead, as well as a no-hit bid into the bottom of the fourth inning before the Chargers erupted to tie the score. UAH sent eight batters to the plate, scoring four runs off five hits with a UNA error to tie the game at 4-4.

Garst, however, recovered, getting out of the inning with the go-ahead run in scoring position. She held the home team scoreless the rest of the way to improve to 21-2 on the season, working eight innings with 11 strikeouts.

UNA got its go-ahead runs in the top of the eights. After Alex Brown was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, she was sacrificed to second by Katie Eakes to bring Tittle to the plate. The senior from Lynn connected on a 1-0 pitch for her eighth home run of the season.

North Alabama was able to get the early lead by scoring once in the top of the third inning and three times in the fifth. Mackenzie Roberts gave the Lions the early lead with an RBI-double.

Roberts drove in another run in the fifth when her ground ball scored Destiny Wright from third base. UNA added an RBI-single by Kara Brewer, as well as an unearned run when Bailey Nelson scored from third on a wild pitch to take the 4-0 lead.

At the plate, Tittle was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Brewer also drove in a run and was 2-for-5.

In the second game, UNA overcame a 6-2 deficit, only to watch the Chargers score three unanswered runs to get the win. Trailing 6-2 in the fifth inning, the Lions scored twice on UAH errors, and added an RBI-single by Brewer and a two-run triple by Tittle to take a 7-6 lead.

The Chargers, however, wasted little time responding. With two on and two out in the bottom of the fifth, Alaina Hampton hit a three-run home run to give the home team a 9-7 advantage and UAH was able to hold on for the win.

Brewer, Brown and Hannah Shollenberger each had two hits to lead the Lions. Tittle's triple capped a 4-for-6 day at the plate with four RBI.

Laken Distefano (14-2) took the loss after working the first 4.2 innings from the circle. She allowed nine runs off six hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game series, as well as the regular season with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
