UNA, UAH SPLIT BASEBALL DOUBLE-HEADER

HUNTSVILLE – Brandt Holland was 5-for-8 with three RBI as the University of North Alabama baseball team split a Gulf South Conference double-header at Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday. The 5-3, 4-6 split gives the Lions a 31-16 overall record with a 19-10 mark in GSC play.

In the opener, UAH erased a 3-0 deficit with a three-run fourth inning to tie the game. UNA starting pitcher Tyler Joyner, however, recovered and held the home team scoreless the rest of the way to improve to 8-4 on the year.

Holland led off the fifth inning with a double and later scored on a UAH error to represent the go-ahead run. The Lions added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Kyle Hubbuch doubled and reached third following back-to-back walks. An infield-single by Davis Elliott scored the run and accounted for the final score.

UNA took the early lead with single runs in the top of the first three innings. An RBI-single by Holland in the first gave the Lions a 1-0 lead before Elliott scored from first base on a double by Peyton Sockwell in the top of the second inning.

Holland also hit a solo home run in the third inning to extend the UNA lead. The senior from Sheffield finished the opener 3-for-4 with two RBI. Kevin Brenning and Tate Mathis also went 2-for-4 for the Lions.

Joyner allowed three runs after scattering eight hits. He added 10 strikeouts.

In the second game, a three-run seventh inning was not enough as the North Alabama rally fell short. The Lions scored three runs after entering the final frame trailing 6-1. A sacrifice fly by Tate Mathis and an RBI-double by Elliott closed the gap before an unearned run off a UAH error brought the tying run to the plate.

The Chargers, however, were able to get out of the jam to end the threat.

After scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning, UAH added single runs in each of the next three frames to take the 6-1 lead.

The Lions got on the scoreboard in the top of the third. Ben Cooley led off the inning with a single and later scored on Holland's single up the middle. UNA, however, would not score again until the seventh.

Cooley finished the second game 2-for-3 at the plate. Holland and T.J. Lockett added two hits each. Lane Wallace (6-6) took the loss on the mound. He worked the first 3.1 innings, allowing five earned runs off six hits.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game series with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
