FLORENCE, Ala. –
Chandler Carrera booted a 38-yard field goal as time expired to lift the University of North Alabama to a 37-35 win over Azusa Pacific at Braly Stadium.
In North Alabama's first home game as a Football Championship Subdivision program, the Lions hosted unbeaten Azusa Pacific, ranked 24
th in Division II, and the kickoff was delayed for two and a half hours for lightning.
The Cougars scored on their first play from scrimmage but North Alabama held a 9-6 lead at the half on three Carrera field goals. APU led 20-19 after three quarters before UNA took a 34-20 lead with just 8:48 left in the game. Azusa Pacific then mounted TD drives of 75 and 72 yards to pull within a point at 34-33. The Cougars converted a two-point conversion to take a one-point lead at 35-34 with just 1:16 left in the game.
North Alabama then drove to the APU 21 before Carrera hit his fifth field goal of the day for the win.
Carrera's five field goals tied a school single-game record as he hit from 32, 39, 19, 34 and 38 yards.
UNA improved to 3-1 overall and Azusa Pacific falls to 3-1.
The Lions have won all three of their games this season by overcoming deficits in the fourth quarter.
The Cougars had 503 yards of total offense with quarterback Tyrone Williams, Jr. throwing for 401 yards and five touchdowns. North Alabama had 394 total yards as quarterback
Christian Lopez threw for 238 yards and one TD, receiver
Riko Morris threw a TD pass and Terence Humphery added a rushing touchdown.
North Alabama plays at Campbell on Sept. 29 at 5 p.m. in Buies Creek, N.C.
